Private Endpoint clusters converting from replica set to sharded clusters incurs downtime.

Those customers who are only interested in private endpoints have to do this conversion during a maintenance window as there is no workaround to reduce this downtime only using private endpoints.

What would you like to see happen?

Describe the desired outcome or enhancement.

We should provide an automated way for this conversion with minimal or no downtime. This is applicable to private endpoint deployments of all the three cloud providers (AWS, Azure and GCP).

Why is this important to you or your team?

Explain how the request adds value or solves a business need.

This would allow considering convert from Replicaset to Shar with data in place and avoid other options that expose to other risks that wec consider higher.

What steps, if any, are you taking today to manage this problem?

This results into customers exploring other options of enabling VPC peering, or IP allowlist or even using other tools like mongosync to reduce the downtime during the conversion which is at least cumbersome.
