Create distinct indexes for Analytics nodes

To effectively use Workload Isolation, it is desirable to have different indexes on the operational cluster nodes than the indexes used to support analytics and reporting query patterns. It would be powerful for Atlas to enable different indexes on Analytics nodes.

Please add this, and I have a specific way I would like this to be added. Please add an option to https://www.mongodb.com/docs/manual/reference/method/db.collection.createIndex/ createIndex to allow me to set the replica set tags that an index is applicable to. This feature wouldn't help me if it's only available via the Atlas CLI or dashboard.

Frankly, I am a bit disappointed that the analytics nodes are advertised as a way to isolate workloads, when the feature set does not actually enable us to do so effectively.

This feature will help many mongodb customers perform better for analytic workloads with different index strategy.

Hi Team, This is a much needed feature for one of our usecases, like we need multiple indexes only on analytics node but that should not be replicated in primary nodes. Is there any plan to release this in near future.

Yes, it would be awesome... thanks.

The use of asymmetrical indexes across replicas in a cluster is not a supported configuration in modern versions of MongoDB. Nevertheless it's certainly worth thinking about a future architecture that could support use cases with different workload and indexing requirements concurrently.
