  1. Atlas backup to second region

We would like the option to have our Atlas backups automatically copied to a 2nd region to support our DR initiative. I realize we could create a live database node in a 2nd region, but that is more costly and complex. Having the backup sync to another region that we can restore off of in case the primary region fails would be simpler and more cost effective.

Is this something that is on your roadmap, and if so, when will it be released?

    Thanks!

  2. I'd like to have a scheduled mongodump backup option

I'm coming from mLab and I'm used to having an option in my backup strategy that includes a mongodump backup as well as what Atlas calls a CPS (cloud provider snapshot). The latter is actually a snapshot of the database directory at the filesystem level, which is great for instant restores within Atlas (same or different cluster). However, the mongodump backup (from mLab as an example) allows me to backup on a regular schedule and download those backups for restores locally and elsewhere outside of Atlas.

Yes, I can run mongodump operations myself from a system outside of Atlas, but…

  3. option to create a final snapshot before deleting a cluster

Today when an Atlas cluster is deleted, all backups/snapshots of this cluster are deleted along with it.

This is especially an issue when working with automation tools like terraform, where a cluster can be deleted by accident easily.

In AWS Aurora Postgres, for example, there is an option to create a "final snapshot" before deleting the cluster.

If this option is enabled for a cluster, whenever a user triggers the deletion of the cluster (either manually, via API, or any other method), a final snapshot will be created, before the cluster is deleted.

This final snapshot is then available independently…

  4. Option to restore one or more db from snap to cluster. Right now, it involves manual dump and restore

Currently we can only restore full cluster from backup like snap using GUI interface. If we want to restore one or more specific db, it needs manual dump and restore from backup. if we have an option to restore specific db to cluster through GUI interface, it will be very useful.

  5. Add tunnelling to allow querying Cloud Backup snapshots

The Legacy Backups have a feature to allow connecting (tunnelling) to a snapshot to query it. This allows querying a database snapshot which is great for quickly inspecting data in the past for troubleshooting. This would be handy to have for the Cloud Backups. With Cloud Backups instead I now have to download a snapshot, load it temporarily on a cluster and remove it when done.

  6. Annual Snapshot Retention Policy Option

I have customers that would like the ability to retain annual snapshots going back 5 or so years for compliance reasons. Currently, you can do this with monthly snapshots by retaining for 5*12 months, but then you have to store all the monthly snapshots in between.

  7. Allows to share Cloud Provider Backup Snapshot with customer's Cloud Provider account

What is the problem that needs to be solved? Add an option (as it was in mLab) that allows to share the Cloud Provider Backup Snapshot (EBS Snapshot [1], in case of AWS) for Atlas Cluster with customer's Cloud Provider account. This action is easier, quicker and cheaper for customers than manually downloading the Atlas Snapshot.

Why is it a problem? (the pain) A) Operational pain: as of now (2020-02-18), if you require to execute disaster recovery scenario with restoration of your Atlas Cluster data outside of Atlas Clusters you'll need to create a Cloud Provider Backup Snapshot Restore job…

  8. Allow users to download backup snapshots from BYO-KMS encrypted clusters

Many clients download backup snapshots to keep an offline copy of their data either to restore it into their on-prem development environment or to keep an offline copy of their data. At the moment, Atlas does not allow downloading backup snapshots that have customer BYO-KMS encryption enabled.

  9. Cloud backup for m0 instances

It would be nice and convenient if lower-tier users could have the cloud backup option available (I believe m5 is the smallest but it's $9/month). I use m0 for one of my projects and I know mongodump is an option but I would much rather pay $1/month extra for backup capabilities. This project is quite small and I don't need much resources, but I would like the ability to scedule daily backups for a small fee.

  10. Snapshot cluster and copy

In one click I would like to copy the exactly one database and put it in another cluster. This is especially useful for debugging.

This would allow us to easily recreate the database from our production cluster and put our staging (or other possible clusters) cluster into an exact state to help replicate issues or bugs.

  11. Can we support multi-region or dual-region backups on GCP

If the region is down, there is no way to pull the backups and restore in another region. With multi-region or dual-region, a customer would be able to get access to the backups.

  13. SHA1 Digest hash for Atlas Cloud Backup Restore

Atlas Legacy Backup used to have digest hash (SHA1 Checksum) on the restore job, but it is currently not available in Atlas Cloud Backup. This feature will be helpful in validating the integrity of the downloaded file.

  14. Automatic backup outside Atlas

For DR strategy, one need to have its backups outside Atlas.
This can be achieved in several ways. Some are:
    - Provide APIs to download the current backups and let the customers automate this on their side
    - Write backups in the customer provided cloud account (aws s3, azure blob stroage...) My favorite option

I found many ideas related to my needs, but they were too specific. This need is more general: just provide a way to have backups automatically outside of atlas.

  15. Permission level to query snapshots

Right now I have to give an admin permission to allow someone on my team to query snapshots from a backup (i.e. downloading the tunnel file).
I don't want to give an admin permission just to allow our data analysts or a developer trying to understand data corruptions to view the database at an older date.

  16. Sync backup data with AWS and GCS

I use Atlas because it's easy to set up, especially with backups. Without this feature, I have to build sync tools with the API to make sure my backups are secure. If someone got into our database and deleted the cluster - the backups are completely lost.

  17. Smart backup scheduler (deferring snapshot backups X minutes based on load metrics)

seems like a potential enhancement for the snapshot schedule to consider cpu/connection/etc load metrics before deciding to run or not

  18. Use the User's Profile Time Zone for PIT Restore

When viewing Cloud Provider Snapshot information, all dates are listed in the time zone on the User's profile. However, the date/time to be entered when trying to perform a PIT restore has to be entered in UTC time. This is asking a lot of someone who is probably already really nervous to be able to correctly calculate the difference between their time zone and UTC time.

  19. Queryable Snapshot like Cloud Manager's Continuous Backup

Like we can do in Cloud Manager Continuous Backup, We can query a snapshot. This download an .EXE file that will create a tunnel directly to the Backup Storage and allow us to retreive the document that we need (using localhost:27017), without restoring the whole backup, or having a 2nd database, giving access to the developer, ...

  20. snapshots without indexes

It would be great to have the option to save Atlas backup snapshots without indexes. When using TTL indexes, when the data is restored, it is automatically removed because it is expired. Being able to create snapshots without indexes would save a lot of time to the current workaround.
