  1. Unblock users in Russia and Belarus

Currently MongoDB blocks access to MongoDB Atlas for users who are located on the territory of Russian Federation, Belarus (and other countries).

MongoDB Support team confirmed this is the case and stated that the reason is US regulations and sanctions, referring only to the blog post published on their website (https://www.mongodb.com/blog/post/mongodb-assistance-ukraine-shut-down-work-russia). The blog post does not mention that the access to users is blocked.

To our best understanding not many other tech companies have implemented such strict measures.

We've also taken the time to delve into the sanctions topic and have reviewed every public release of sanctions on…

  2. Altas CIDR ranges for network containers are too restrictive

    Background:
For each MongoDB Altas project, the clusters built in that project are built using a "network container", which tells MongoDB Atlas which pool of IPs it can select from given a CIDR range for its underlying infrastructure.

AWS minimum imposed CIDR value/subnet size: /28
MongoDB minimum imposed CIDR value for clusters deployed to AWS: /24

Azure minimum imposed CIDR value/subnet size: /29
MongoDB minimum imposed CIDR value for clusters deployed to Azure: /21

For customers who elect connecting to MongoDB Atlas via VPC peering, they know that IP space is a scarce resource. Reserving /24 or /21 IP space…

  3. Ability to schedule "Hedged read" Turn on/off

Customer experienced read latency during maintenance after sharding.
Our guidance is to turn on "Hedged read" option.
So the customer need to turn on/off "Hedged read" before/after maintenance, because turning on "hedged read" increase CPU usage that means server cost increasing.

Currently "hedged read" on/off can be done by technical support from MongoDB but this feature is needed for operational efficiency and reducing human error.

  4. Atlas - Queue cluster pause request to perform it when it's possible

It is impossible to pause a cluster that was recently resume.

The documentation indicates it is a voluntary feature (https://www.mongodb.com/developer/products/atlas/pause-resume-atlas-clusters/) to allow the Atlas service to apply any pending changes or fixes to the cluster that may have accumulated while it was paused.

I agree with this, but it cause a problem for automation (for example sometimes we launch a platform exclusively for testing purpose and then shut it down, it is complicated to add a delay for pausing the Atlas cluster) and even manually for example at the end of the day of work this requires either…

  5. All Clusters permission for ORG level roles

Today, for you to be able to use All Clusters you need to have permissions on each project, your user needs to be included in each project.

When we use a federation, we generally don't grant permission for each project to a team of administrators. We grant ORGOWNER, for example. By doing this, we lose access to All Clusters. The idea was to include the permission to use All Clusters for project-level permissions that have permissions to read project resources, for example ORGOWNER or ORGREADONLY.

  6. Add usability to tags

Atlas has the option to set tags to clusters. But - now what? They are just pieces of text floating around, but are completely useless.
How about enabling to filter clusters in a project or even organization based on those tags? Split costs based on them? Query them with API calls? I have no use of those tags when they are just texts in the main page of Atlas...

  7. SimplifiedJson format

Kafka source connector has an output format option of SimplifiedJson which is easier to parse by the downstream applications. Mongo utilities or any of the Atlas features do not support this as an output format as of now.

Mongo does have canonical format output for mongo export which can be matched with kafka extended json format but it requires additional translation by the 3rd party applications.

Is there a feature in place already to have atlas $out or mongo export or dump utilities to output data in Simplified json format? If not can this be looked into?

  8. Atlas Search equivalent for "should" but ignoring score

Currently to perform an "OR" check in an Atlas Search query the only available operator is "should" which contributes to score.

I propose "ought" the equivalent operator, but doesn't contribute to score.

Alternatively, I suggest an option to $search to omit score entirely, this could offer a little performance boost on large document set by removing the need to track score when it is not needed.

  9. Within Atlas, create service to allow project owners to schedule shutdown/start up times of cluster to reduce hosting costs

Request to provide an enhancement to the Atlas service to allow project owners to schedule shutdown/start up times of clusters(or databases) and provide some notification of a successful shutdown and startup. This should be a feature with the Atlas UI and API.

This will allow teams that have non-critical environments to effectively "turn off" and freeze the state of a cluster in order to reduce hosting cost during off hours. This can provide a better value proposition for existing customers and a selling point for new customers, without having to introduce a third party tool that requires additional configuration and/or…

  11. Atlas DNS name more than 23 characters from the cluster name.

Allow users to have longer DNS name from the cluster name. Currently, Atlas cuts the first 23 characters from the cluster name and the users can't check the cluster name inside the mongo shell.

    Example:

Cluster name longer than 23 characters : xxxx-us-east-1-multi-use-1
    DNS name : xxxx-us-east-1-multi-us.xsj8t.mongodb.net

  12. Atlas SQL Interface: Support queries based on BinData (UUID)

We have a need to write reports that query MongoDB via the Atlas SQL Interface using BinData (a UUID with BinData type 4) as selection criteria (see support ticket Case 01313460: Query bindata using atlas sql interface). We were told that this is currently not supported, although querying data based on a unique identifier is a most basic and essential function as far as DB interfaces are concerned.

Example query from ticket: SELECT * FROM bn_events WHERE _id = CAST('6b0be834-c03e-47bc-9c7d-4726a1e8c69a' AS BINDATA)

This is a serious limitation that may prevent us from being able to use Atlas SQL Interface for…

  14. Allow multiple VPC CIDR ranges in Peering connection

Allow multiple VPC CIDR for a single Peering connection from Atlas to AWS.

Our AWS account has two CIDR ranges for a single VPC. Atlas peering connection only allows connection to a single CIDR range.
Today, I need to create a separate private link connection to be able to connect to the second CIDR range.

  17. Always show an option for both SRV Connection String and Standard Connection String

There are more than a few examples where users DNS does not resolve SRV Connections strings. They are often directed to select an old version / legacy connection string.

    Two issues with this are:
    1. Sometimes outdated/deprecated options are provided (ssl=true)
    2. Serverless does not provide this.

It would be very handy to have the ability to specify a schema validator using bson type UUID (binData subtype 4) instead of the more generic binData subtype 0.

  19. Azure VNet terminology needs updating

Setting up the Peering Connection (Project Network) has antiquated terminology and instructions.

Microsoft Entra ID is the new name for Azure AD. The names Azure Active Directory, Azure AD, and AAD are replaced with Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft Entra is the name for the product family of identity and network access solutions. Microsoft Entra ID is one of the products within that family. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/fundamentals/new-name#:~:text=Microsoft Entra ID is the,the products within that family.

  20. Customer feedback around the UI of Atlas - unable to edit multiple documents at once

The customer wanted me to provide product feedback around the inability to edit multiple documents at once from the Atlas UI. The customer uses a 3rd party tool to do this instead and thought it would be better and more intuitive if this was built right into the Atlas UI.
